Police are questioning four people about an armed robbery at a Gold Coast tavern early this morning.

They said two men, armed with what is believed to be a shotgun, forced patrons and staff to lie on the ground at the Varsity Lakes Tavern about 2:40am (AEST).

They complied and no-one was injured.

The thieves took a sum of cash and drove off in a black car that was found about seven kilometres away in the suburb of Clear Island Waters.

Members of the Police Dog Squad tracked the occupants to a nearby address and two men were detained.
