SINGAPORE: More Singapore residents have given a positive assessment of the public transport system here, both in terms of quality and affordability, according to a Reach survey released on Monday (Apr 4).
The poll found that 80 per cent of respondents agreed that the country has a good public transport system – up from 74 per cent last year. Similarly, 66 per cent agreed that public transport in Singapore is generally affordable, up from 63 per cent last year, it showed.
In terms of bus wait time, 37 per cent of those polled felt that the wait time has improved compared to a year ago, while 10 per cent said it is longer, the survey revealed.
As for bus crowdedness, 39 per cent said it is less crowded now than a year ago, while 20 per cent felt the opposite is true, it added.
About six in 10 respondents felt that the Government’s efforts will help improve the reliability of train services, while in general, respondents who use the bus or train as their main mode of transportation were more confident that the Government’s efforts will help in this regard.
In terms of lowering car ownership in Singapore, half of all respondents were supportive of this initiative. Between 16 per cent and 18 per cent of bus, MRT and taxi users were not supportive, whereas 31 per cent of car users did not support, the survey showed.
Reach commissioned a telephone poll with 1,200 randomly selected Singapore residents aged 15 and above from Feb 29 to Mar 4, 2016.
